2008 UPDATE. In the face of the continued severe decline in market value of horses today, caused by the acute overpopulation of horses in America, and the closing of horse slaughter plants that gave responsible outlet for culling aged, unsound & ill-bred animals, the breeder of today has some serious decisions to make about whether to continue breeding. We are electing to largely hold off on breeding now, and will likely produce only a very few foals per year anymore, from mares that have highest value for breeding and lowest value for using due to age or injury. Our emphasis is also on using our stallions much more than breeding them, which is always the best emphasis regardless of what the market says.

*Seekers Warrior, our dun North American Curly Horse main herd sire, has been leased to Dave Archambault II, Tokola Ohitika (Brave Fox), Tribal Council member, Sioux Tribe, Standing Rock Reservation, for reinstating horses with their people carrying bloodlines that trace directly back to Sitting Bull's horses.

My Quarter & Curly Horses for sale
AQHA My Lynx Starling & 2002 dun curly filly, *Warrior Shade

I have been selecting and breeding registered horses, cattle & stockdogs my whole life. I have raised my daughters in the same tradition. As breeders, we understand that we have the responsibility to constantly improve our animals, not just multiply them. This has always been our goal. I trained with & judged (competitively) very successfully among top renowned stockhorse judges in the USA. I strive to produce the highest quality roan Hancock (Blue Valentine) bloodline Quarter Horses possible. I believe my Curly Horses are among the highest quality stock horse type curlies.

Our Curly Horses came from the late Ernie Hammrich - bloodlines that trace straight back to Sitting Bull's (Sioux) horses, which traced directly back to 18th century horses owned by the Crow. There are a number of old paintings that depict these Curlies ridden by both Crow and Sioux warriors in the 19th century, including the Battle of the Little Big Horn.

I first and always select for temperament. My stallions must sire foals that are improved over their dams, with superior intelligence, quiet sensible temperament and calm reasoning ability. In public our stallions are expected to behave like geldings. Most of our horses have a loving temperament and become family members and special friends.

I select for high quality horses of excellent conformation, stout heavy ("soggy") bodies, straight legs with substantial bone, strong feet, pretty heads, nicely arching necks, and long hips. I also look for long sloping shoulders, and long-strided efficient (smooth to ride) movement. I strive to breed no-nonsense, practical, using kind of horses that reflect my high standards. A horse has to be pretty good to stay here very long.

No horse is perfect however, and I do sell what I don't want, don't need or what doesn't seem to work with what I have. Sometimes I sell some of my best breeding quality horses; not only to promote my program, but simply to "share the wealth." (And we want to do our part to improve the breed, make good ones and get them out there) I will always tell you the truth about each horse I sell and why I am selling it.

Photos & descriptions of my horses for sale on the internet are accurate: I clean up backgrounds, color, brightness etc, as warranted, but I never stretch the photos or in any way exaggerate or change the horse's actual conformation. I guestimate some of my horses' height by eyeball, and have measured many of them with a stick - so check w/ me to be sure when height is important for you. Also, please always double check with me about their level of training - some are handled more than others. Ask if listed mare prices include their foal or not, or (bred back) stud fees or not. All foals are ICHO eligible, and some might be ABCR eligible. Some of my horses are DNA typed. I find I cannot afford ABCR membership and breeders fees, so I do not usually keep that membership current.

Please note, prices and offerings are subject to change (and often do) as our situation evolves.

Currently, due to debts, I am deciding whether to sell most or all I have. I will consider offers on all my horses. They will have to be paid for before they leave the ranch.

YOUR SATISFACTION is our primary concern. If you aren't satisfied, we don't look good; if you aren't happy, our horses won't be happy. Satisfaction & soundness are guaranteed by replacement of equal or higher value animal, for 30 days after purchase. Transport costs of any returned horses or their replacements, are the buyer's risk & responsibility.

TERMS & CONDITIONS  Please note, our prices listed are not guaranteed. We do try to update sales pages regularly. And while we don't normally make major price increases or major price decreases, we do reevaluate the horses - and the market - and our situation - on an ongoing basis. In some cases payment plans are possible. Usually the sale is completed before the horse leaves the property.

DEPOSIT We have many inquiries, and frequent visitors, so our sale policy is: first come, first served. A 50% deposit will hold a horse for 30 days, or until weaning. After that, board will be assessed at $2/day. In case of loss before acquisition, amount deposited (paid) will transfer to another horse. In case of an abandoned purchase, the deposit is forfeited to cover lost sale opportunities. {Special situations considered}

PAPERS  All our horses for sale are eligible with one or more of the following registries...

  • AQHA American Quarter Horse Association

  • AHQHR American Half Quarter Horse Registry

  • ICHO International Curly Horse Organization (NACHR North American Curly Horse Registry)

  • ABCR American Bashkir Curly Registry (note: there is no Bashkir blood in North American Curly Horses)

...unless otherwise indicated.

SOUNDNESS EXAMS  - In the real world, although expensive soundness exams may be comprehensive, accurate and reliable, they are still only momentary assessments, not guarantees of the future. They are actually only accurate & valid for a few minutes - the duration of the examination. Beyond that, they expire. Soundness checks are useful tools that help buyers identify horses with recognizable symptoms of soundness issues, whether acute, chronic, or developing. Unfortunately they can not provide guarantees of future soundness. No vet can guarantee how long a sound horse will remain sound - only whether it is sound at the time of examination. Any expectations you may have beyond that are unrealistic, because with horses, anything can happen at any time.

TRANSPORT is the buyer's responsibility and risk. To help, I have listed the contact information on this webpage for transporters across country and overseas. Remember, the more advance notice you give a hauler, the better rate for shipping he can usually give you.

OUR HORSES are raised on the open range over 1000's of acres on the Crow Reservation. They run on native high prairie grasses year round. They have mineral & salt free choice and are supplemented with hay and occasionally grain, only in bad winter weather. Our foals are wormed twice a year, the mares once or twice a year. Range conditions produce foals that are naturally strong and healthy, both physically and mentally. Range raised horses typically mature a little slower, develop stronger legs and feet, develop more athletic ability and balance, live longer, and have fewer vices, than typical stall babies. Since they live in herd structure on open range, they are well socialized to get along with other horses. In the corral, with humans, it follows through naturally with proper handling and common sense. Some of our babies are halter broke, some are not yet. (Ask). Our breeding goals are curl, temperament, intelligence, conformation, durability, size, bloodline preservation, type, movement and color.

BUYING YOUR FIRST CURLY HORSE?

Training & temperament. A huge selling point for buying a Curly Horse is their remarkably calm, wise & forgiving temperament. However. Remember that Curly Horses are horses. Each have their own personality, degree of natural gentleness, and amount of handling. Any horse can misbehave or get dangerous when handled incorrectly. And any human can handle a horse incorrectly at any given time; and the less knowledgeable they are, the more frequently that happens. Also, more intelligent horses (like Curlies) are often quicker to interpret incorrect handling as abuse, and resist. Resistance creates dangerous situations, especially for beginners. So even Curly Horses that are highly intelligent, naturally calm and reasonable can still disappoint (or even hurt) someone when mistakes are made. (Read more on my Natural Horsemanship page.)
Although Curly Horses as a breed truly DO have a calmer, more thoughtful and intelligent temperament than other horse breeds, in general - I have also seen many individual Curly Horses that do not have that special quiet and kind "Curly" disposition, displaying a temperament no different than other horse breeds. These horses will typically be the first ones to be culled (hence they are sold) by discriminating breeders that select for temperament. So keep these facts in mind when considering purchasing a Curly Horse, and educate yourself about horse handling before buying your first one.

Selection. If you are new to the Curly Horse breed, and are interested in purchasing your first Curly horse, be aware that in 2001 there were only about 3500 registered Curly Horses in existence, and that number was not including un-reported deceased horses. The point is, although there might be a Curly Horse near you for sale, exactly the right sex, size, age, training, and color you are looking for, unfortunately the chances are against it. Not that you should give up, but you need to realize that due to the rarity of this breed, many new buyers do end up buying weaned Curly Horses and raising and training them, themselves.

References. If you are uncertain about purchasing a Curly Horse over the internet, and do not know the breeder or seller very well, take some time and ask around. The Curly Horse community is "a small world," as is the Hancock Horse breeders' community. So, the few unscrupulous sellers out there are fairly well known by the majority. So take the time to get to know the people in this industry and educate yourself prior to a purchase. Don't be afraid to ask for references. Most of these folks are happy to direct you to honest sellers that have your and their horses' best welfare in mind.

Know your limitations - get help if you need it! Thankfully there are not many unscrupulous sellers out there. But an even larger danger is that many (especially Curly) Horse sellers are themselves fairly inexperienced horse owners. A much bigger danger is a mismatch between buyer and horse offered for sale. Do not assume the seller is experienced in assessing the value or conformation or even the training level of a horse; because many well-meaning Curly Horse owners (even those with great references for being honest) simply are not as knowledgeable in these areas as they believe they are. And it is difficult even for more knowledgeable folks to determine a horse's suitability for any particular buyer, especially over the internet. Unintended problems result. The best way to avoid that is to realize that the assessment of a horse - its degree of training, breeding quality or temperament - cannot be provided solely by the seller. If you as a buyer are not experienced with assessing the level of quality or suitability of a horse for yourself, find somebody that is, and get additional input. Get references. Hire veterinarians, farriers or trainers nearby to see the horse. If possible have the horse inspected & evaluated. You must take the responsibility as a buyer, to inform yourself of what you need to know before making such an important purchase.

Stop by and see us any time you come through Montana, we love to show & talk horses!
