YOUR SATISFACTION is our primary
concern. If you aren't satisfied, we don't look good; if you aren't happy,
our horses won't be happy. Satisfaction & soundness are guaranteed by
replacement of equal or higher value animal, for 30 days after purchase.
Transport costs of any returned horses or their replacements, are the buyer's
risk & responsibility.
TERMS & CONDITIONS Please note,
our prices listed are not guaranteed. We do try to update sales pages regularly.
And while we don't normally make major price increases or major price decreases,
we do reevaluate the horses - and the market - and our situation - on an
ongoing basis. In some cases payment plans are possible. Usually the sale
is completed before the horse leaves the property.
DEPOSIT We have many inquiries, and
frequent visitors, so our sale policy is: first come, first served. A 50%
deposit will hold a horse for 30 days, or until weaning. After that, board
will be assessed at $2/day. In case of loss before acquisition, amount deposited
(paid) will transfer to another horse. In case of an abandoned purchase,
the deposit is forfeited to cover lost sale opportunities. {Special situations
considered}

SOUNDNESS EXAMS - In the real world,
although expensive soundness exams may be comprehensive, accurate and reliable,
they are still only momentary assessments, not guarantees of the future.
They are actually only accurate & valid for a few minutes - the duration
of the examination. Beyond that, they expire. Soundness checks are useful
tools that help buyers identify horses with recognizable symptoms of soundness
issues, whether acute, chronic, or developing. Unfortunately they can not
provide guarantees of future soundness. No vet can guarantee how long a sound
horse will remain sound - only whether it is sound at the time of examination.
Any expectations you may have beyond that are unrealistic, because with horses,
anything can happen at any time.
TRANSPORT
is the buyer's responsibility and risk. To help, I have listed the contact
information on this webpage for transporters across country and overseas.
Remember, the more advance notice you give a hauler, the better rate for
shipping he can usually give you.
OUR HORSES are raised on the open range
over 1000's of acres on the Crow Reservation. They run on native high prairie
grasses year round. They have mineral & salt free choice and are supplemented
with hay and occasionally grain, only in bad winter weather. Our foals are
wormed twice a year, the mares once or twice a year. Range conditions produce
foals that are naturally strong and healthy, both physically and mentally.
Range raised horses typically mature a little slower, develop stronger legs
and feet, develop more athletic ability and balance, live longer, and have
fewer vices, than typical stall babies. Since they live in herd structure
on open range, they are well socialized to get along with other horses. In
the corral, with humans, it follows through naturally with proper handling
and common sense. Some of our babies are halter broke, some are not yet.
(Ask). Our breeding goals are curl, temperament, intelligence, conformation,
durability, size, bloodline preservation, type, movement and color.
BUYING YOUR FIRST CURLY HORSE?
Training & temperament. A huge selling point for buying a Curly
Horse is their remarkably calm, wise & forgiving temperament. However.
Remember that Curly Horses are horses. Each have their own personality,
degree of natural gentleness, and amount of handling. Any horse can misbehave
or get dangerous when handled incorrectly. And any human can handle a horse
incorrectly at any given time; and the less knowledgeable they are, the more
frequently that happens. Also, more intelligent horses (like Curlies) are
often quicker to interpret incorrect handling as abuse, and resist. Resistance
creates dangerous situations, especially for beginners. So even Curly Horses
that are highly intelligent, naturally calm and reasonable can still disappoint
(or even hurt) someone when mistakes are made. (Read more on my
Natural
Horsemanship page.)
Although Curly Horses as a breed truly DO have a calmer,
more thoughtful and intelligent temperament than other horse breeds, in
general - I have also seen many individual Curly Horses that do
not have that special quiet and kind "Curly" disposition, displaying
a temperament no different than other horse breeds. These horses will typically
be the first ones to be culled (hence they are sold) by discriminating breeders
that select for temperament. So keep these facts in mind when considering
purchasing a Curly Horse, and educate yourself about horse handling before
buying your first one.
Selection. If you are new to the Curly Horse breed, and are interested
in purchasing your first Curly horse, be aware that in 2001 there were only
about 3500 registered Curly Horses in existence, and that number was not
including un-reported deceased horses. The point is, although there might
be a Curly Horse near you for sale, exactly the right sex, size, age, training,
and color you are looking for, unfortunately the chances are against it.
Not that you should give up, but you need to realize that due to the rarity
of this breed, many new buyers do end up buying weaned Curly Horses and raising
and training them, themselves.
References. If you are uncertain about purchasing a Curly Horse over
the internet, and do not know the breeder or seller very well, take some
time and ask around. The Curly Horse community is "a small world," as is
the Hancock Horse breeders' community. So, the few unscrupulous sellers out
there are fairly well known by the majority. So take the time to get to know
the people in this industry and educate yourself prior to a purchase. Don't
be afraid to ask for references. Most of these folks are happy to direct
you to honest sellers that have your and their horses' best welfare in
mind.
Know your limitations - get help if you need it! Thankfully there
are not many unscrupulous sellers out there. But an even larger danger is
that many (especially Curly) Horse sellers are themselves fairly inexperienced
horse owners. A much bigger danger is a mismatch between buyer and horse
offered for sale. Do not assume the seller is experienced in assessing the
value or conformation or even the training level of a horse; because many
well-meaning Curly Horse owners (even those with great references for being
honest) simply are not as knowledgeable in these areas as they believe they
are. And it is difficult even for more knowledgeable folks to determine a
horse's suitability for any particular buyer, especially over the internet.
Unintended problems result. The best way to avoid that is to realize that
the assessment of a horse - its degree of training, breeding quality or
temperament - cannot be provided solely by the seller. If you as a buyer
are not experienced with assessing the level of quality or suitability of
a horse for yourself, find somebody that is, and get additional input. Get
references. Hire veterinarians, farriers or trainers nearby to see the horse.
If possible have the horse inspected & evaluated. You must take the
responsibility as a buyer, to inform yourself of what you need to know before
making such an important purchase.
